Vanity Vazquez, B.A., a former GEAR UP student herself, graduated this past May from the University of Connecticut, Stamford. She graduate from Central High School in 2009, then later received her bachelor’s degree in Human Development & Family Studies and a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexualities Studies. She is currently in the process of applying to school’s to earn her master’s degree in social work. She understands the benefits and the impact GEAR UP has on today’s youth, especially first generation college students. She hopes to share her experiences in GEAR UP with her students. Vanity has worked for the organization, Domus. Domus which ran a summer program at the Bridgeport Juvenile Detention Center as well as a youth mentor for a program called UPals at UConn. The program allowed middle and high school students to attend college for the summer. She mentored these students for four summers in a row. Vanity has also interned at the Stamford Courthouse with the adult probation department. One of her favorite quotes, which she will apply in the classroom is, “The higher you climb the mountain, the better the view."
